GM was back out testing the 2012 Camaro Z28 again today, and they are making no secret of the benchmark they are attempting to clear -- the 2010 Ford Mustang GT500. Another session of comparative testing was the order of the day, right down to the color of the paint!
Through the front-end camouflage we can see a much larger air intake in the lower fascia as well as a pronounced lip spoiler. With the camo pulled over the front tightly, a new set of inlets on either end of the bumper can also be seen. We've been told the Z28 front end will be quite close to the Transformers Camaro GM showed at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. From the profile, we can see a pretty serious looking wheel/tire/brake package. A set of 20-inch wheels, wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 tires appear to be the order of the day for the Z28. The brakes appear to be the same ones we find on the Cadillac CTSv. The doors are also bearing a bit of joke from the GM engineers with a NASCAR-like "2" decal. We guess they wanted you to think this is a racecar! They may be right..
Rear
At the rear we can see a monster set of dual pipes on either side. The exhaust note coming from the Z28 was described by our shooter as "nothing short of unholy!" There are also subtle changes to the rocker panels as well as the lower-rear fascia. While our photos don't show it, we also noticed a few pieces of body-colored tape across the trunk lid on this prototype. We believe the tape was covering the fastener points for a rear spoiler.
While we've known for some time that the Z/28 would have the "LSA," 6.2L, supercharged V8 under the hood, a piece of paper taped leaves NO DOUBT as to what is under the hood! We can see this particular Z28 prototype is also packing an automatic transmission. Watch for the 2012 Camaro Z28 to go on sale in Q1 or Q2 of 2011.
