Comparing this prototype to the Vertrek, the concept car's general shape looks to have made the jump to production largely unchanged. Don't let the new design fool you, however, as the overall size of this new Escape does not differ much from the current model. Code-named "C520", this new CUV will launch very late in 2011, or Q1 of 2012. That could make this a 2012 or 2013 model year vehicle. While nothing is official so far, we'd be shocked if Ford didn't retain the "Escape" badge.
Ride
The new Escape will be riding on Ford's global C1 chassis. It will be sharing that platform with many other vehicles including the Focus, C-max, Transit Connect and the forthcoming C-segment MPV from Lincoln. With the industry trend of doing away with the big engines the new Escape will have a 2.5L 4-cylinder for the base model and an Ecoboost 4-cylinder for the upmarket model. Exactly which Ecoboost motor will be under the hood remains a bit of mystery. Several sources indicate it will be the 2.0L, but at the same time, we're hearing the 1.6L is getting strong consideration due to its' CAFE-pleasing fuel economy.
Hybrid
There will also be a hybrid model available, with Ford's next-gen hybrid powertrain providing the motivation. We hear it should be available shortly after launch. Much like the Fiesta and Focus, this new Escape will be a global vehicle. Europe will also get a version of this CUV to replace the Kuga. While there will be subtle design changes between the Escape and Kuga, expect these two to look fairly similar once the curtain drops.
